I had heard of these Baby Signs when I was pregnant, and I was super skeptical when we first heard about it, but we went to the Baby Expo in Sacramento, and I saw a set of boy twins watching the TV, and “talking” to each other in the signs! I was convinced that I had to do it! We ended up buying a kit that they had with a DVD and books, and a quick reference chart. I read and practiced like crazy while I was waiting for my girls to come out!

When my girls were first learning to communicate… we started teaching them Baby Signs. We never got through the entire gamut of signs, but we taught them the ones we thought would be the most beneficial. “Eat”, “Sleep”, “more”, and a few others. It took a few times, but you know what?!?! They actually got it! It really did help keep them from throwing too many fits! They told US when they were hungry, or thirsty, and what they wanted to eat or drink. They told US when they needed a new diaper. It was amazing.

Now I want to share the awesomeness… I am giving away 2 books… Baby Signs and Baby Minds a $29.95 value.

Baby Signs is all about the sign language and learning to communicate with your baby before they can talk, and Baby Minds is full of Brain Building Games, Your Baby Will Love!

Green Monday – Kitchen Remodel

Jul-28-2008 By Monica

If you’re looking into remodeling your kitchen, as many people are right now… There are so many options out there that would not only look great, but be eco-friendly as well! One of the coolest things I’ve seen are the recycled stone-chipped composite countertops! They look just like granite, and are just as durable! I love the look of granite countertops!

Bamboo is quickly growing in popularity for so many items, from clothing, and textiles to cutting boards, backsplashes and flooring. It’s fast growing, and strong! Another option for flooring, among other uses, is cork! Cork is a renewable resource that is made from the bark of a tree. It’s hypoallergenic, sound-absorbing, and resists mold and mildew. How’s that for kitchen friendly!?!

When it comes to saving electricity, there are a few options that can help you save money!

Fluorescent lights will definitely help you save money on lighting. They can cut your energy use by up to 50%! The best way though is to use natural light to brighten up your kitchen (and home) to save on the electrical bill. Use sheers if you have curtains, or open up your drapes to let in the sunlight! Convection ovens are much more efficient than the standard ovens. They use a fan to drive the heat very quickly from the source, helping to cook your food faster! Some manufacturers even make the 1/2 and 1/2 double ovens where you can use just 1/2 of an oven to cook smaller meals rather than using a large oven to do the same. Last but not least, top and bottom refrigerator/freezer units are more energy efficient than the popular side by side models. Less cold air escapes from them, thus saving the motor from turning on constantly.

Some other good ideas are using natural fabrics for your window treatments, or chair cushions and having designated Recycling stations in your kitchen. Cotton or wool are great choices for the windows and chairs. They’re easy to find, great for dying with their vibrant color choices, and the textures are awesome. Man-made fabrics are typically made with chemicals that can harm the environment. The recycling stations are great to have. Some are installed under the counter, and some are on wheels so they can be moved around to where ever they are needed.

Personally, I love to have a special place for recyclables. I don’t always remember to take them outside to the big blue can, so having a special can in the kitchen for them makes it so much easier to remember… and teach the girls that not everything is garbage..

Not all of these ideas require a full remodel to use them! You can find a lot of the smaller items will be useful right now! If you are in the middle of a remodel, try looking into some of the larger items, and Good Luck!

As my girls got older and started getting taller, I knew that safety was going to be the major topic in the house, especially in the kitchen. Victoria had already burned herself once when she started playing with my unplugged, yet still hot curling iron one morning. She knew what “hot” was. Alexandra, though, had not really experienced something super hot, and I wasn’t sure telling her “hot” would keep her away all the time. At this point, my biggest concern was keeping them away from the stove. They LOVE to help me cook, and I just knew that it would only take a split second for them to get just an inch too close to the stove for disaster, so I started looking into something to keep them away.

I looked around and saw a couple of options  out there. I eventually decided on the Prince Lionheart Adjustable Stove Guard. It was easy to find, and fairly inexpensive. It’s made of a heat resistant, poly-carbonate plastic, and it is adjustable to fit stoves from 24 to 36 inches wide. Perfect! I knew it would fit my stove! I ordered it from Walmart.com and waited. They had their Site to Store system in place, which would save me nearly $9 on shipping, so I chose that option. It was supposedly only going to take a couple of weeks, but that turned into a month. When I finally got the email from them telling me that it was in, I had nearly forgotten about it.

I went to pick it up, and opened it up as soon as I got back to the house. Of course, the girls were right next to me the entire time asking what it was. I explained that it was going to go on the stove to protect them so they wouldn’t get burned while Mommy and Daddy were cooking. I laid out all of the pieces on my counter and checked out the instructions. It was pretty self explanatory, but when it comes to safety products, I want to make sure I’m installing it properly. It came with 3 plastic shields, 3 plastic clips, and 3 pieces of double sided foam tape. I was a little skeptical, but thought that if they sell so many of them, it’s gotta work.. right!?!? WRONG!

I put everything together, cleaned off the stove front with some cleaners, dried it off, and applied the double stick foam tape. It took about 3 minutes for the weight of the plastic shields to pull the tape from the stove. I thought maybe it would help if I just stuck the clips to the stove and let them sit for a bit before I put the shields in. A few hours later, I tried putting the shields in the clips, and it fell off again… I stuck them back on and just held it there for a while. Finally… I thought it would stay on, and it did, mostly. I did have to check it constantly.

We were able to use it for a couple of days, and then I noticed some little bubbles forming in the plastic shields, and a little bit of a bend in it as well. This thing was melting! So much for heat resistance. I let it go, thinking it wasn’t too badly destroyed, and still fully functional.. Besides, I didn’t want to wait yet another month for one if I re-ordered it.

Just a couple of days later, I was boiling some water for pasta, and walked away to check on the girls in the play room. I came back, and saw the shield had melted even more! I turned off the stove immediately and let everything cool off. That was dangerous! Had that plastic melted any further, it could have set my house on fire! I took photos of the shield, and called Prince Lionheart, the manufacturer. I got to a customer service agent, and explained what the situation was. I told her that the stove guard was installed properly, and that it was leaning away from the stove, etc. She asked me to email the photos and told me she would get back to me. I received a call a couple of days later and was informed that it was determined that the damage was caused by user error. She accused me of touching the plastic with a hot pot or pan, thus melting it. I told her that the photos were taken with the pot and guard in place. I did not move anything when I took the photo AND the melting is from the top, not the bottom where a pot or pan could touch it. I was beyond upset when she told me it was my fault. I asked to speak to a supervisor. Eventually, they agreed to send me a new piece to replace the melted one.

By the time it arrived, my girls had already learned well enough to not touch the stove. We have had talks with them about how hot the stove is, and held their hands about a foot away from a boiling pot so they could feel the steam and heat from that far away… They knew that it got hotter the closer you got to the source.. Besides, the sticky tape was ruined, and I just didn’t have the energy to deal with it any more.. I was so disappointed in the product and the company…

In doing some research for this write up as far as prices go, I found several customer comments on various sites that stated the same thing happened to them… with a gas stove… Nowhere on their product description or box does it state that this product should not be used with a gas stove. It says it is Heat Resistant, and I followed all instructions.. It should have worked..

I’m sure they have several good products, but this is not one of them… I do not recommend this product. I personally feel it is more of a hazard than a safety feature.. especially if you have a gas stove…

I got mine from Walmart.com for $16.24.

I was graciously sent a sample of another Shielding Lotion called Skin MD Natural. Like, Gloves in a Bottle, it is absorbed quickly, turning the outer most layer of your skin into a hydrating invisible shield that keeps irritants out of your skin. Again, my entire family had the opportunity to try Skin MD Natural, and see how they’d like it.

This lotion was not sticky, or greasy. It had no overwhelming scent, and seemed to moisturize skin pretty well. After a few days of use, they did notice a visible difference in the condition of their skin. The only complaint anyone had about it was that it was very watery and that it took a little while for it to actually rub into their skin.  It’s also good for facial use! Although I didn’t get to try it on my face, I can bet it would reduce the appearance of wrinkles if it’s increasing the moisture in your skin. I think I may try that now!

If you would like to see if Skin MD Natural is available in your area, check out their store locator.

If it is not at a retailer in your area, it probably will be soon. But rather than wait, you can buy it now! Go to Skin MD Natural’s website and click on their Order Page

Thanks to Pete Grimaldi for sending these samples out to me and allowing us to try this great product!

I was lucky to have been offered a chance to try Gloves in a Bottle. It’s what they call a Shielding Lotion. Rather than trying to replace the moisture that your skin has lost, it actually bonds with the outer layer of your skin to help lock in your natural oils and moisture, resulting in better hydrated, softer skin.

My entire family tried this lotion, and really liked it! It’s not greasy at all, and it doesn’t have any overpowering or flowery smells, which made it a hit among the men in my family. They noticed a significant difference in the condition of their skin after using it just a few times! Gloves in a bottle does not wash off like regular lotions either, so it lasts much longer! They do recommend re-applying the lotion every 4 hours for continuous skin protection.

I’ve heard of it being used by medical staff as well! My sister in law works in the medical field, and she loves this product. She explained that because she constantly has to wash her hands, her skin would get dry and crack. She found Gloves in a Bottle, and uses it daily. She hasn’t had any issues with her skin since!

I love this lotion so much that I’m going to be a regular customer as soon as my free samples run out!

If you are in the Sacramento area, you can find Gloves in a Bottle at any of these retailers

If you are not in Sacramento, you can locate a retailer near you
