19233Walmart is teaming up with Jumpstart along with many awesome celebrities and encouraging everyone to Read for the Record this October 8th!

Join in with over 1 Million children and adults as we bring awareness to the importance of children’s literacy and try to break a World Record for the number of people reading Eric Carle’s beloved book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in one day! If you don’t already have this book, go to your local Walmart and purchase your copy for only $8. From now until October 8th, all proceeds from the sales of the specially marked books will go directly to the Jumpstart Program. All of the commemorative books will have a special foreword with messages from Matt Lauer & Meredith Viera, Mary Luise Parker and LL Cool J!

“Most children in low-income families have very few, if any age appropriate books in their homes. As a result, they miss out on the reading experiences that form the foundation for success in school and life. In fact, each year, one third of America’s children arrive at their first day of school without the skills necessary to succeed. ”

- James Cleveland, President: Jumpstart

If you are able, you can also sponsor a copy of the book and give another child a chance at becoming an excellent reader! Go to http://www.readfortherecord.org/books and donate a book to a child in need!

Join Walmart and Jumpstart for a Twitter Party on September 24th, 2009 from 9-11pm EST! Every 100th retweet of the #JUMPSTART hashtag will win a free copy of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar! 500 Books will be given away!
